In chapter 1 in, ” The Awakening,” written by Kate Chopin, the story begins with an obnoxious yellow and green parrot that repeatedly blurted,” Get out! Get out! Damn it!”, as Mr. Pontellier relaxed on a cottage’s porch. After being disturbed, he made his way towards his own cottage and began to read his newspaper there. Upon reading, Mr. Pontellier examined his surroundings and found that his wife, Edna Pontellier, and Robert were making their way from the beach. Giddy and burnt, they sat upon the top step of the porch where Mr. Pontellier read his day-old paper. Mr. Pontellier, obviously annoyed, commented on their burnt complexions. “You are burnt beyond recognition.” (Chopin, Page 7). He decided to leave their company to go play billiards at the “house”. Robert stayed with Mrs. Pontellier because he enjoyed her company. As Mr. Pontellier began to make his way to the house, his children, 4 and 5 years old, kissed him goodbye.
