In chapter 25 of,”The Awakening,” written by Kate Chopin, Edna would be unable to work on her art and instead would go to the horse races with Mrs. Highcamp and Alcee Arobin. Edna was an expert on horse races considering they were a big part of her childhood. ” Arobin caught the contagion of excitement which drew him to Edna like a magnet.” (Chopin, page 124). The three had dinner together after a race that was overall boring and quiet even after Alcee’s efforts to liven the evening. Alcee took Edna home after dinner and was able to convince Edna to return to the races with him. Edna and Alcee returned to the horse races alone. The two became well acquainted with one another and they went to dinner after the race. Alcee showed Edna a dueling scar he received when he was younger and Edna responds by grasping the wrist tightly in her hand. She guiltily walks away explaining that it repulsed her. Alcee gets dangerously close to Edna as he gathers her hand to his lips for a lingering goodnight. He tries to make another plan with Edna but she continuously refuses him. He apologizes for his actions and leaves. Edna is left feeling as guilty as if she actually cheated on Robert, not her husband. She knew that Alcee Arobin meant nothing to her.
