Chapter 24:

In chapter 24 of “The Awakening,” written by Kate Chopin, Edna was almost relieved after her father’s departure because of all of the arguing the two have been doing over Edna not going to Janet’s wedding. The Colonel exclaims to Leonce,” You are too lenient, too lenient by far, Leonce. Authority, coercion are what is needed. Put your foot down good and hard; the only way to manage a wife.” (Chopin, page 119). Mr. Pontellier left for his lengthy business trip to New York and Edna was surprisingly upset about it. Leading up to his departure Edna was affectionate and after he left she cried. After her initial reaction a type of peace washed over her. Her sons were off visiting their grandmother and Edna had the house all to herself. It was as if she were seeing the house for the first time. Edna dined alone and later read Emerson and took a relaxing bath before she drifted off to sleep.
