Chapter 17:

In chapter 17 in,” The Awakening,” written by Kate Chopin, the Pontelliers have returned home in New Orleans after their summer vacation. The couple owned a beautiful home included with a sculptural green yard and filled with many pleasurable possessions. Mr. Pontellier enjoyed all of his belongings immensely. He would often times be caught walking through his house fondly examining all of his belongings. Tuesdays were supposedly Mrs. Ponetellier’s  reception day where she wore an immaculate gown and spent her day greeting callers. On this particular Tuesday evening Mr. Pontellier realized that his wife was not wearing her normal Tuesday attire and questioned her. Edna told him that she went out on her Reception day and missed the callers which angered Leonce. He exclaimed that her absence would make them look bad and negatively affect his business. Edna did not understand his frustration.  Leonce, displeased with his homemade dinner, left their house to enjoy some dinner at his club. On similar nights like this one, Edna was known to lose her appetite but tonight she finished her entire dinner. In a blind rage Edna goes to her room, throws her ring on the floor, and deliberately tries to smash it. She fails and instead grabs the nearest vase and shattered it onto the floor. A worries maid rushed upstairs to clean the mess and handed Edna back her wedding ring which she reluctantly accepted.
