In chapter 23 of the novel,” The Awakening,” written by Kate Chopin, Edna’s father came to visit Edna and get assistance on picking out Janet’s, Edna’s sister, wedding gift and an outfit for him to wear on the special night. The Colonel had white hair and a matching mustache that made his bronze face stand out. “He was tall and thin, and wore his coats padded to make his chest and shoulders appear more massive.” (Chopin, page 113). Edna decided to entertain her father at Madame Ratignolles’ soiree musical. She made the Colonel the guest of honor and made him feel right at home. When Dr. Mandelet came over to observe Edna at dinner “he could discern in Mr. Pontellier no trace of that morbid condition which her husband had reported to him.” (Chopin, page 115). Edna was still set on entertaining her father which led her to taking him to the horse races. They visited with Mrs. Mortimer Merriman, Mrs. James Highcamp, and Alcee Arobin and they livened their time. The Doctor told the story of when a married woman who fell in love with another man but ended up with her husband in the end. Edna was not amused and matched his story of one of her one. She explains of a couple that rowed away in a small boat and disappeared in the Baratarian Islands. The Doctor reluctantly believes that the mysterious man in Edna’s life is Alcee.
