Chapter 16:

In chapter 16 of,” The Awakening,” written by Kate Chopin, it has been five days since Robert and Edna has devoted her time to only pleasurable activities, such as swimming, during the final days of her vacation. She misses Robert incredibly and finds any excuse to talk about him. Edna is often times found with Madame Lebrun looking at old photo albums and discussing Madame Lebrun’s son. Robert sent a letter to his mother, Madame Lebrun, and Edna is dying to read it. ” It possessed the greatest interest and attraction for Edna.” (Chopin, page 78). After reading it she is left jealous that she did not receive a letter as well. Many people ask Edna how she is doing without Robert and if she misses him. Even Mr. Pontellier, her husband, expresses regret for her. Edna and Leonce discuss Robert, which doesn’t cross Edna’s mind as wrong because she knows that she feels differently for the two men. Edna discussed with Madame Ratignolle that she would give up the unessential for her children, such as money and her life, but she would not give herself. The women did not see eye to eye. Mademoiselle Reisz asks Edna, on her way to the beach, if she misses Robert. Edna learns that Robert isn’t his mother’s favorite son but in fact it is his younger brother, Victor. Apparently Robert beat Victor up after he disrespected Mariequita. Mademoiselle Reisz gave Edna her address and tells her to visit her during the winter.
