In chapter 38 of,” The Awakening,” written by Kate Chopin, Dr. Mandelet was walking Edna home and the two were talking. Dr. Mandelet asks Edna if she is going abroad with Mr. Pontellier and Edna responds with,” No, I’m not going. I’m not going to be forced into doing things.” (Chopin, pages 183-184). The doctor offers to listen to Edna’s troubles but Edna politely declines. Edna reaches her little home and is very excited to be with Robert. For a moment she stops to think of the children but decides to instead think of them in the morning and spent the night with Robert. When reaching inside Edna finds a note left by Robert that reads,” I love you. Good-by- because I love you.” (Chopin, page 185). Edna is left feeling faint after reading this note and stays up all night.
