Chapter 3:

In chapter 3 of,” The Awakening,” written by Kate Chopin, Mr. Pontellier finally returns home from the Klein’s around 11 pm in a fantastic and chatty mood. His high spirits woke up his heavy-eyed wife who had been fast asleep upon his arrival. Mr. Pontellier tried discussing the events that occurred in the day but Mrs. Pontellier barely answered for she was “overcome with sleep.” (Chopin, Page 12). Mr. Pontellier checked on his adored children to make sure that they were comfortably asleep and found that Raoul had a high fever and decided that Mrs. Pontellier needed to look after him. Mrs. Pontellier stayed in bed because she was convinced he didn’t have a fever. Mr. Pontellier sternly convinced his wife to check on their son while he quickly went to bed. Mrs. Pontellier was out of bed and wide awake now and decided to get some fresh air outside as she began to cry. The weight of her marriage issues began to overcome her. The next morning, Mr. Pontellier was off to work in Carondelet Street and would return the following Saturday. During the week he was gone, Pontellier sent a package to his family with special delicacies. This impressed many of the ladies and they exclaimed that he must be “the best husband in the world!” (Chopin, Page 15). Mrs. Pontellier reluctantly agreed.
