Chapter 2:

In chapter 2 of,” The Awakening,” written by Kate Chopin, Chopin draws us an illustration of the characters; Mrs. Pontellier and Robert. Mrs. Pontellier “was rather handsome than beautiful,” with her thick and horizontal eyebrows that made the shadows of her bright, yellowish brown eyes more prominent. She had an alluring face with features that worked together well. Mrs. Pontellier is an american woman with a little amount of french.

Robert “seemed quite proper and natural.” (Chopin, Page 9). He was clean-shaved which made his features more striking. Robert smoked cheaper cigarettes but valued cigars that were gifted to him. He is also very young which made him sound a bit vain and self obsessed. Mrs. Pontellier’s children were very fond of Robert.

Mrs. Pontellier and Robert continued on with their afternoon chatting about anything and everything. They were both very intrigued with what the other had to say and listened intensely. They both talked quite a bit about themselves. Robert rambled on about how he is traveling to Mexico in the autumn,” where fortune awaited him.” (Chopin, Page 10). Mrs. Pontellier talked about where she grew up and her father’s current Mississippi plantation.  After talking for awhile, the two decided that Leonce Pontellier would not be returning for supper and they would continue without his company.
