In chapter 36 of,” The Awakening,” Edna runs into Robert at a Garden Cafe that she frequents. “I am destined to see you only by accident,” (Chopin, page 175) She says to him as she isn’t surprised to run into him. Edna invited Robert to share her dinner so that they can talk. Edna bluntly asks him why he has kept away from her. Roberts calls her cruel for trying to have him reopen his wounds while she has no intentions of healing them. They change the subject and finish the rest of their dinner with small talk. Robert walks Edna back to her little home. “She leaned over and kissed him.” (Chopin, page 177). Robert stood up, took her in his arms, and kissed her again while bringing her down to the sofa. Robert admits that he loves her and was constantly thinking of her while he was away at Mexico. Edna proclaims that she is independent and belongs to no one. They were interrupted by a knock on the door from Madame Ratgnolle’s servant. The servant explained that Madame Ratignolle was going into labor. Edna was rushing to leave while Robert, with a passionate kiss, begged her to stay with him. Edna made him promise to wait for her and then left.
