Chapter 27:

In chapter 27 of the novel,” The Awakening,” Arobin comes to visit Edna. Edna is still feeling exhilarated and happy thinking of Robert’s return. Edna begins to wonder what kind of woman she is. “By all the codes which I am acquainted with, I am a devilishly wicked specimen of the sex. But I can’t convince myself that I am.” (Chopin, page 137). Edna recalls a moment with Mademoiselle Reisz where she described how birds fly over tradition and prejudice and Arobin tells Edna that he thinks Mademoiselle Reisz is crazy. Edna believes that she is perfectly sane. Arobin wants to veer the conversation towards Edna again and believes that Edna seems far away tonight. Edna smiles at Arobin and they lean in for a passionate kiss. It was the “first kiss of her life to which her nature had really responded.” (Chopin, page 139).
